A well-made binding offers the perfect finish for your project.

Binding a hexagon-shaped quilt is done the same way you would bind a regular quilt. Even a beginning quilter can create a professional-looking quilt binding for her hexagon quilt. Choosing an appropriate binding and sewing it on correctly provides the perfect finishing touch for any quilt. In this case, however, the process will take longer because of the extra corners involved, but with time and patience, you will be able to create a beautiful and durable binding for your quilt.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the circumference of your quilt. Add 2 inches for each corner.

    • 2

Cut a piece of fabric for your binding. This piece needs to be the same length as the number from Step 1. If your fabric isn't long enough for a single strip, cut several pieces and sew them together until you are able to get the length you need. The width of the strip should be 2 1/2 inches.

    • 3

Fold the piece of binding fabric in half lengthwise and press.

    • 4

Hold the binding against the right side of the quilt, with the raw edges of the binding lined up with the raw edges of the quilt. Begin the binding strip in the middle of one side and pin it to the corner. Leave the first 2 inches of the binding free.

    • 5

Sew the binding down, stopping 1/2 inch from the corner. Fold the binding at a right angle to create a 45-degree fold and sew the fold down.

    • 6

Repeat the process until you have reached the beginning of your binding strip.

    • 7

Sew the ends of the binding together, trimming if necessary.

    • 8

Finish sewing the binding to the front side of the quilt.

    • 9

Pull the binding over to the back side of the quilt and pin it down.

    • 10

Hand stitch the binding to the back side of the quilt, repeating the folds at the corners.
