Mix a Margarita

The margarita's origin is hazy. Tijuana and Juarez both lay claim to its birth, as do other Mexican locales that are not as well-known. Perhaps Señorita Margarita just traveled across the country teaching people how to make her drink. Serves one.

From Quick Guide: New Year's Eve Party Ideas
Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Rub half a lime around the rim of a chilled margarita glass. Dip the glass into a plate of coarse salt.

  2. Step 2

Put 2 oz. tequila, 3/4 oz. fresh lime juice and 1 oz. Triple Sec or Cointreau in a cocktail shaker with cracked ice.

  3. Step 3

Shake three times and strain into the glass.

  4. Step 4

    Garnish with a lime wedge.

Tips & Warnings
  • Variations of the classic margarita include the blue margarita (use blue curaçao instead of Triple Sec and garnish with an orange wedge) and the melon margarita (use Midori instead of Triple Sec and garnish with a wedge of melon).
  • To serve a margarita on the rocks, put a few ice cubes in the glass before straining the drink over them.
  • Some people don't like the salt, so you might want to ask first.
  • Mixed drinks contain alcohol, so use moderation.
  • Never drink and drive.

on 6/30/2006 People tell me this is the best margarita they've ever had. I've been making them for about 5 years this way. Give it a try and enjoy. Makes for one very happy customer.

In a Martini Shaker (with ice), combine:

3 ounces Sweet & Sour
2 ounces good Tequila (Price is not the determining factor, as using something like Patron is wasted; I prefer Cazadores or Sauza)
1 ounce Triple Sec
1 ounce Lime Juice

Shake 5-6 times, and pour (with ice cubes) into salted (or unsalted I suppose) Margarita glass. If you can see you've made too much, remove some of the ice cubes (not the alcohol). Garnish with 1 shot of Grand Marnier floated in the center (it will mix a little bit, don't worry). Serve immediately.

on 11/22/2005 In addition to the tequila, Triple Sec and lime juice, add a shot of Sweet & Sour. Whir on high until your blender reaches the highest "pitch." Blend for another 30 seconds to make a perfect frozen margarita!

on 11/22/2005 Use GOOD tequila (try Patron, Porfidio or Don Pedro). Use Cointreau instead of Triple Sec.
Variation (serves 2): 3 oz. Tequila, 2 oz. Cointreau, 1 oz. brandy, juice of 1 lime, 3 oz. tart lemonade. Shake well with ice. Strain and serve w/ lime wedge.
