How to Get Smudges and Smears Out of Wool

Clean a wool garment without damaging the fibers.

Whether the wool you need to clean is a sweater, pillow or throw, you can use the same methods for stain removal. Wool is water resistant, so many smudges and smears that mar the fabric are simply sitting on top of the surface and can be removed with a simple soaking. Use this method for any wool garment or home accessory with a stain or smudge of unknown origin.

Things You'll Need

• Soft white cloth or towel
• Wool wash
• Washing machine

Instructions

1. Saturate the white cloth with wool soak. Place the wet cloth over the smear or smudge.

2. Wait five minutes, then gently dab at the smear to remove as much of it as possible.

3. Fill the washing machine with warm water. Add a 1/2 cup of wool soak and swirl the water with your hand to blend.

4. Place the wool item in the washer and gently press it under the water. Leave the lid of the machine up and allow the garment to soak for at least an hour.

5. Switch the washing machine to the spin cycle. Remove the wool garment promptly.

6. Spread the wool item on a bed or table to dry, then store or use as needed.

Tips & Warnings

• Repeat the process a second time if any stain remains.

• There is no need to rinse the piece if you are using wool soak; it is designed to be a leave-in conditioner.

• Never put a wool item through a regular wash cycle; it will shrink.

• Don't use harsh or abrasive cleansers on wool; they will damage the fibers.

• Don't use bleach on wool; it will dissolve the fibers and ruin the garment.
