Building a Square Deck Around a Pool

Designing the Deck

  • The first step to take is to design your square deck. This is relatively simple since the deck is square, but it is a step you need to take. It ensures you get all the right materials and that the deck comes out perfectly square. Measure across the pool at the two widest points and then add on the additional width of the deck on the largest measurement. This is the length and width of the deck, since it is square.

Deck Shape

  • The shape of the deck will be square on the outside. However, it may be curved on the inside to follow the contour of your pool. That means you will do a lot of cutting at different lengths to make the deck floorboards. To do this effectively you will need to cut floorboards as you work. Set up the deck supports and floor joists, then start measuring for the deck planks.

Installing the Supports

  • After you make your measurements for the deck, dig holes in the ground at the four corners and every four feet along the sides to set the corner posts and supports. Sink 4-by-4 posts into these holes and fill the holes with cement, then let them dry overnight. Now, along the inside edge of the pool, install shorter posts in the ground directly across from these supports. Nail 2-by-6 floor supports from the outside posts to the inside posts along the edge of the pool. These supports will act as floor joists for your deck.

Installing Flooring

  • The next step is to install the deck flooring. Cut the boards to fit across the deck floor supports and nail them down with galvanized nails. Start from the outside and work toward the edge of the pool. When you get toward the edge of pool, use a jigsaw to cut the deck planks to match the curve of the pool edge.
