How to Compare Serger Machines

A serger or overlock stitch sewing machine can be very helpful for the serious sewer as it can hem and cut the edges of the cloth typically, which a regular sewing machine cannot do.

  1. Stitch Types

    • When comparing serger machines, it's important to consider which stitch types are most important for your needs. Stitch types include the three thread overload, which is the most basic of the serger stitches; the two thread overedge, which is a binding stitch; the flatlock stitch, which makes a flat seam allowance; the two thread chain stitch, which is a regular straight stitch on top with a thicker stitch on the bottom; five thread safety stitch, which makes a two thread chain stitch and a three stitch overlock at the same time; and the cover stitch, which uses the knife while sewing.

    Features to Consider

    • Other features to consider are whether the machine is mechanical, electronic or computerized and if it has a good ease of threading, easy tension adjustment and embellishment features.

    Other Considerations

    • As of 2011, the differences in cost vary from a few hundred dollars to a few thousand dollars, so it's important to try the machines before you buy to make sure you are comfortable using the serger and that it has the features that you need within your budget.
