Certain types of flooring and pets just don't mix. In fact, when owning a pet and installing new flooring, many aspects must be considered. Pet owners who have ruled out wood flooring or tile may find themselves choosing between vinyl and laminate flooring.
Identification: Laminate Flooring
Laminate flooring is a pressure-treated type of floor made from engineered wood products and petroleum-based resins. With pets, laminate flooring can swell or warp if any standing liquid, such as urine or vomit, is left for a certain period.
Identification: Vinyl Flooring
Vinyl flooring is made from chlorides and petroleum-based products, giving it a larger variety of colors than laminate flooring. Vinyl, much like laminate flooring, is resistant to pet scratches as well as pet stains.
Choosing with Pets
In short, both vinyl and laminate effectively reduce allergens relating to pet hair and resist scratches. However, vinyl flooring may be a better choice, as it is more resistant to pet accidents and is less likely to buckle or swell, as there is less moisture penetration.
