Before a wedding, Colorado couples must obtain a marriage license.

Colorado law states that every couple must obtain a marriage license before they can be legally married. Colorado couples also need to observe state laws regarding who can legally solemnize their marriage during the wedding ceremony.

  1. Registration

    • Both individuals must be at least 18 years old in order to obtain a marriage license. Individuals aged 16 or 17 can marry with parental permission. Both individuals must provide social security numbers and photo identification when purchasing the license, which costs $30 in cash. Both applicants must sign the license in person.

    Solemnization

    • During the wedding ceremony, the marriage can be solemnized by a judge, most public officials or any religious mode of solemnization. The solemnization modes of Native American tribes are recognized as well. In addition, the couple can solemnize their own marriage. Family or friends are not allowed to solemnize marriages.

    Other Laws

    • If both individuals cannot appear to sign the marriage license, the absent party can fill out an absentee application. The notarized absentee application, along with identification, can be presented during the normal marriage license application process.
