The Effect of Temperature on Stain Removal

The type of stain determines whether you should use hot or cold water to remove the stain. Since heat tends to set stains, never use hot water on an unknown stain. In addition, do not iron stained items or put them in the dryer. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Protein Stains

    • Soak protein-stained items in cold water before washing. Protein stains include blood, milk, vomit, mud, egg, pudding and ice cream. Never use hot water on protein stains, since this cooks the protein into the fiber of the fabric.

    Tannin and Oil Stains

    • Wash tannin and oil stains in hot water with detergent -- not soap. Tannin stains include coffee, alcohol, cologne, tea, fruit juice and soft drinks. Oil stains include hand lotion, bacon fat, salad dressing, car door grease and mayonnaise.

    Stain Removal Tips

    • Treat stains as soon as possible. Do not use soap on stains and avoid excessively rubbing stains. Take stained dry clean only garments, fur, leather and suede to professionals for stain removal. Always check garment labels before using chlorine bleach.
