Where Is Malabrigo Yarn Produced?
Malabrigo is a company in Uruguay that produces hand painted, wool yarns. This family-owned business uses merino sheep specifically to produce wool yarn in a variety of different weights or thicknesses. Some of the yarns also blend merino wool and silk.

Beginning of Malabrigo
-
Malabrigo first started in one of the founder's kitchen. The very first yarns were made on the stove of Antonio Gonzalez-Arnao in 2005. Antonio, together with Tobias Feder, founded Malabrigo Yarn in Montevideo, Uruguay. The yarns were first sold in the United States, and after a positive response to the product, distribution was expanded to Europe and eventually world wide.
Hand Painted Yarns
-
Malabrigo produces hand painted yarns. By hand painting, subtle color changes and tones result in beautiful finished pieces. Malabrigo works with a small cooperative of women in Uruguay who paint the yarn. Antonio still selects and designs the colors for the yarns, and new palettes of colors are introduced each season. Yarn colors range from subtle, earthy tones to bright, jewel tones.

Types of Malabrigo Yarn
-
The majority of Malabrigo yarns are merino wool in different weights. The range of weights, or gauges, runs from the thinnest lace weight to super chunky thick and thin yarns with the look of home hand spun yarn. Malabrigo also produces a Silk Merino yarn, which is a 50/50 blend of silk and baby merino, and an organic cotton yarn made of 100% cotton.
Patterns for Malabrigo Yarn
-
Malabrigo has produced two leaflets with patterns that showcase the hand painted colors of their yarns. While the variety of weights makes it possible to use Malabrigo yarn for almost any type of knitted project, they probably are best known for their sock yarn. The sock yarn is made from 100% merino wool, and comes in solid and variegated colors.
Where to Find Malabrigo Yarn
-
Malabrigo Yarn is sold around the world, online and in retail stores in the United States, Canada, Brazil, Australia, Japan, United Arab Emirates and most countries in Europe. Malabrigo does not sell their yarn directly to the general public, but they do post their product line and new colors on their company website.
