Greek cooking requires several tools that people already use in most kitchens.

Greek cooking does not require much equipment other than good, strong hands, but a few essential items make cooking Greek food much easier, more convenient and more authentic. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Mortar and Pestle

    • A mortar and pestle is a bowl and matching thick stick that you use to mash ingredients and combine them. You can use them to create dough, mash chickpeas for hummus and smash up nuts or other dessert toppings.

    Spice Grater

    • Many spices adorn Greek foods, so a spice grater is an excellent tool to have. A spice grater allows you to grate up fresh herbs into spices that you can sprinkle on top of salads, meats and Greek sandwiches.

    Pepper Grinder

    • In Greek recipe books, most recipes calling for pepper require it to be freshly ground. The best kind of pepper grinder has an adjustable grind to alternate between coarse and finely ground pepper for different dishes.

    Olive Oil Tin

    • Olive oil is one of the most common ingredients for Greek foods. If you do a lot of Greek cooking, it is handy to have a tin filled with olive oil on your counter so you can easily pour it over salads or into a recipe.
