What Is Ral Color?


The Ral color system, is actually a series of systems used to match colors predominantly in paint. This system will assist you when choosing paints for your next home or office project.


  • The system originated in Germany in 1927, the German Imperial Commission for Delivery Terms and Quality Assurance approved it. This system established a common language for color.

  • The aim of the Ral system was to end the mix-ups that can happen when mixing, and matching colors. It established a basic system of four digits to analyze the colors.

The System

  • The system began with 40 standard colors, it now encompasses over 1,898 colors. Now, the system is actually three systems, Ral effect, Ral Classic and Ral Design.

Different Systems

  • The Ral systems are different for each series. In the classic system are just broad and general. In the design system each of the three numbers have a scientific basis.

Design Numbers

  • The first number in the design system numbers stands for the hue of the color. The second number stands for the lightness. The last number stands for the chroma.
