What Kind of Mixture Is a Liquid Foam?

Liquid foams are used for a variety of tasks and projects. However, the material inside liquid foams is often the same. Understanding the components of liquid foam can help you learn how to use it. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Diisocyanates

    • Liquid foam is partially composed of diisocyanates, a type of organic chemical produced in large chemical plants.

    Types of Diisocyanates

    • There are two primary types of diisocyanates, MDI and TDI. Diisocyanates have more than one isocyanate group in the molecule, making them ideal for the production of polyurethane.

    MDI

    • MDI is the diisocyanate most often found in liquid foam. It is combined with another substance, polyol resin, to make a pourable polyurethane foam.

    Polyols

    • Polyols are alcohols that contain several hydroxl groups; when mixed with other substances, such as diisocyanates, an organic reaction occurs.

    Liquid Foam

    • When the MDI reacts with polyols in the spraying process, the chemical reaction results in a foam substance, commonly known as liquid foam.
