Door knobs are used throughout homes, inside and out. Because there are many different types of doors, different types of door knobs are used.

Entrance door knobs are used for exterior doors. Deadbolts and keyed locks are most commonly used with these door knobs. Many homes have exterior doors with one key that can unlock them all.
Passage

The website Door Hardware says, "Passage door knobs, as the name suggests, are door knobs in which one can obtain passage without using a key." These door knobs do not lock. They are often used for children's rooms.
Dummy

A dummy knob is used purely for design. It does not turn or latch. It is only there as a decoration. These knobs are used for doors that are opened infrequently, or on cupboards.
