What Is Wakame Seaweed?

Wakame seaweed looks like slippery spinach. It is thin, deep green, and most often sold either fresh or dehydrated. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Cultural Association

    • Wakame seaweed is found in Japanese and other Asian food recipes.

    Medicinal Effects

    • Wakame seaweed prevents constipation, because of the fiber content. It is loaded with antioxidants that may help prevent colon cancer.

    Harmful Effects

    • Excessive consumption (several plates full a day) of wakame seaweed can cause hypothyroidism, because of the abundance of iodine. The hypothyroidism will reverse itself after three to four months of avoiding the seaweed.

    Preparation

    • Dried wakame seaweed must first be soaked in water for 30 minutes before use. Cut off the leaves and discard the stems. Drop the leaves (briefly) in boiling water to enrich the color.

    Nutritional Data

    • Wakame seaweed is very low in saturated fat and cholesterol. It is vitamin rich, containing vitamins A, C, E and K, niacin, riboflavin, calcium, iron, magnesium, folate, copper, manganese, pantothenic acid and phosphorous. Unfortunately, it is also very high in sodium.

    Common Dishes

    • Wakame seaweed is eaten in salads, soups and broths. Many Japanese restaurants serve wakame soba, which is wakame mixed into buckwheat and turned into noodles.
