Is a Black Dress Appropriate for a Wedding?
The question isn't really whether a black dress is appropriate for a wedding. The real question is when a black dress is appropriate for a wedding. Not every black dress is created equal and so there are some that will be acceptable for a wedding and others that will not.

Formality
-
If the wedding is going to be a formal event or black tie affair, then a long, black gown is an acceptable choice.
Cocktail
-
A black cocktail dress is going to be appropriate for a cocktail wedding. It should still be dressy and classy enough for a wedding.
-
Design
-
Not every black dress is solid black. A black dress with a minimal or large pattern may be more appropriate for a wedding, especially if it incorporates some other, brighter colors.
Material
-
The material of the black dress may make it more or less appropriate for a wedding. Shiny materials such as satin and silk are a good choice. More matte fabrics may be less appropriate.
Style
-
Obviously, the style of the dress is just as important as the color, but style is even more important with a black dress to keep it appropriate for a wedding. Consider the length, sleeves, and neckline and make sure they fit with the style of the wedding.
Inappropriate
-
A simple rule is this: If the black dress feels more appropriate for a funeral than a wedding, then it is inappropriate.
