Fun Fact
-
With so many advances in windows, it is interesting to note that according to the Buffalo Architecture and History Website, the techniques used in stained glass window construction have changed very little since a "how to" was written by Theophilus, a German monk, around 1100 A.D. Glass windows have since proven to be the perfect architectural design feature for both form and function.
Identification
-
Three popular types of glass used in windows are tempered glass, laminated glass and argon-filled glass. Tempered glass is extremely strong and durable, and is often used when safety is a primary issue. Laminated glass cuts noise and helps prevent the sun from fading furniture, rugs and other accessories. Argon-filled windows act as insulation and are often selected to reduce heating and cooling costs. In addition, many homes incorporate design details such as stained or beveled glass.

Prevention/Solution
-
The most obvious rule of cleaning windows is often the one most readily missed: Treat a window according to its specific care and cleaning instructions. Failure to follow manufacturer's recommendations can result in permanent damage. As an important example, most glass manufacturers will strongly recommended against cleaning bathroom block glass with shower spray cleaner, as it can permanently damage the surface of the glass. When in doubt, vinegar and water is always your safest bet, using one-half cup of vinegar to each gallon of water. Clean newspaper is still the best streak-free "sponge" around.
Considerations
-
Hiring a professional on a yearly basis can prove to be a wise investment when safety and cost of equipment are considered. This is especially true if you have windows that need scratches repair or to be winterized. Outdoor windows can be addressed with a power washer. However, you will need to take every precaution to make sure all your windows are in top condition, with no cracks or chips, and that you are using proper water pressure.
Warning
-
Window cleaning has its risks, given than glass can be a dangerous material. Windows should be cleaned with the same attention to safety that you would use with mirrors or crystal wine goblets. A small defect in glass that is unnoticeable by sight can compromise the glass and create serious safety issues.
