Capes-eHow

Capes have been woven in and out of fashion trends for decades, and although varying cape styles may come and go, their effects remain the same: Regal, feminine and cozy. Here are a few ways to wear three different styles throughout fall and winter.

Open Front Cape

An open-front cape allows for more creativity with layers. This one from Leslie Tessler has a herringbone pattern and flowing front. Pair it with a loose-fitting tee and leather pants to contrast textures, but keep everything in monochromatic colors to avoid a look that’s too busy. Nude patent leather pumps, a black and white clutch, and simple accessories are perfect for dressing up the look. Want to keep it casual? Opt for either black sneakers or flats.

Sweater-cape-eHow

For an everyday, comfortable look, sweater capes are convenient to have on hand. A neutral-toned, wrap-around sweater cape can be paired with pants in any bold color and a pair of flat boots. This would make for a great travel outfit with a lighter layer underneath to account for changing temperatures. Dress it up by changing out your flat boots for heeled booties.

A velvet-trimmed button-front cape (DIY here) calls for fancy pants. Black coated denim with suede booties create a look that’s perfect for a night out; it doesn’t require an overcoat since the material is thick wool. Pull your hair into a bun or wear a wide-brim fedora if you’re feeling really bold. An alternate style for this cape? A black dress with knee high black boots.
