How To Make Your Own Linen Spray

eHow Home Blog

When I was growing up, every Monday was laundry day. I’d come home from school and all our sheets and towels would be hanging out on the line. My mom didn’t believe in colored linens, so our white sheets and towels were out in the sun as part of her “extra bleaching” treatment. After dinner on Monday nights, I used to climb into bed really early because my sheets smelled so fresh and clean.

I still love that smell, but I don’t have the time to hang dry my laundry outside. Instead, I cheat. I mix up a DIY linen spray that gives sheets, towels and pillows that fresh scent. Here’s the recipe and the step by step instructions.

Homemade Linen Spray

  • 1 – 16 oz. spray bottle with an adjustable sprayer
  • 1 bottle of vodka or grain alcohol
  • 1 small bottle of your favorite essential oil
  • 8 ounces of distilled water

Open the spray bottle and fill it half way with either the vodka or grain alcohol. I prefer to use grain alcohol since it evaporates quickly and does not have a scent. Vodka has a slight scent, but will work if you can’t find grain alcohol.

Add 20 drops of your favorite essential oil to the alcohol. I love to use lavender oil as it has relaxing properties and is wonderful for helping you fall asleep. You can pick any scent you like. Essential oils come in lots of different scents. Pick one that you enjoy.

Shake the alcohol and essential oil well, and then add the distilled water. Fill it to the top of the spray bottle and shake again. Now it’s ready for use.

Set the sprayer to a light spritz setting and spray your sheets, pillows and towels with your linen spray. The alcohol will evaporate quickly and you will be left with just the wonderful scent of your essential oil.
