Close on Cold Days
You can close crawl space vents for a few days during really cold winter spells, according to the Discovery Channel. To prevent moisture from causing damage--as it can in a relatively short period of time--consider putting a vapor barrier on the floor, such as a sheet of plastic or foil.
You do not want to close off crawl space vents because they remove moisture from your basement, according to the Discovery Channel. You can, however, safely close your vents temporarily if you put a vapor barrier on the floor or use a premium vapor retarder.
