Traditional Country Wedding

Country weddings can take place on the grounds of a farm.

Country weddings combine the rustic touch of the outdoors with the classic elegance of a wedding. Couples planning a country wedding can carry this theme throughout all elements of their wedding, from their venue and attire to reception decorations and favors for guests. Traditional country weddings take advantage of natural outdoor beauty and use decorations that mimic the beauty of nature.

  1. Venue

    • Outdoor wedding ceremonies and natural venues are the mark of a country wedding. A farm, local park or vineyard sets the stage for a rustic country wedding. Couples can say their vows under an arch made of branches and decorate pews with rich red, orange and yellow flowers. For couples who aren't willing to risk rain dampening their wedding day, they can add a country touch to indoor venues with flowers, branches and other elements from nature.

    Attire

    • A bride planning a country wedding might want to stick to a traditional wedding gown, but she can add a country touch to her look with the right accessories. A rustic bouquet or even cowboy boots under the wedding gown add a country touch without being obtrusive. The groom---and his groomsmen---can wear a khaki or brown suit instead of a tuxedo. Bridesmaids can wear dresses in natural hues as well.

    Centerpieces

    • Country weddings can include traditional floral centerpieces or more natural looks. Add richly colored flowers to a Mason jar or tin bucket, and be sure to include greenery for a natural look. Many florists can create elaborate branch centerpieces, which give a natural look to the reception venue. Add some natural light by adding hanging votive candles from the branches.

    Food

    • Hearty comfort food is ideal for a country wedding reception. Forgo the traditional wedding prime rib and fish for entrees like barbecue or ribs. Mashed potatoes with gravy, potato salad, corn on the cob and cornbread complement the entrees well. Martha Stewart Weddings suggests serving miniature pot pies as the first course at a country wedding.

    Favors

    • Favors add a decorative touch to tables and send guests home with a token of appreciation. The favors can also represent the country theme. Martha Stewart Weddings recommends including strawberries and scones in a wooden basket, but you can include any food item, from cookies to candies, in this rustic basket. Alternatively, the bride and groom can send guests home with a touch of nature---mini flowerpots with seed packets are available from a number of online wedding retailers.
