Uses for Coke

If Coca-Cola is your beverage of choice, there's nothing better than a cold Coke on a hot day. However, you may be surprised that a can of Coke is useful for more than just drinking, and is a handy thing to have around for a multitude of other uses. Keep an extra can on hand for cleaning, cooking, in the laundry room and even in the garage. The benefits are not limited to the Coke brand, either; any cola will do. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Coke for Household Cleaning

    • One of Coke's more surprising uses is for household cleaning. Coke makes easy work of one of the least pleasant cleaning jobs: the toilet bowl. Just flush the toilet and pour an entire can of Coke into the toilet bowl. Let the Coke work its magic for an hour, swab it with a toilet brush and flush.
If your pots and pans have stuck-on food and grease, pour in a bit of coke, let it soak for a few minutes, and scrub away the grease and grime.

    Coke in the Kitchen

    • Coke can add pizazz to many of your favorite recipes. Substitute Coke for part of the liquid in cookies, cakes and brownies. To make an easy sweet glaze for a ham, pour a coke in the bottom of the pan and wrap the ham in aluminum foil. Remove the aluminum foil during the last 30 minutes of cooking. Combine Coke with ketchup for an impromptu barbecue sauce, or mix it with a packet of ranch or Italian salad dressing and brush it on a pot roast.

    Coke in the Garage

    • Keep a can of Coke in the shop or garage and dab on a bit to loosen stubborn, rusty bolts. If the battery terminals in your car need a good cleaning, a can of Coke poured over them will do the trick. To remove rust from chrome, dip a sponge or piece of crumpled aluminum foil into a bowl of Coke and rub away the rust. Coke can even clean oil spots from a garage floor. Just pour Coke over the oil spot, let it bubble for several minutes and hose it off.

    Coke in the Laundry Room

    • If your clothes are grimy and greasy, fill your washing machine with warm water and laundry detergent as usual, and pour in a can of Coke to help remove stubborn grease stains. As an added benefit, the Coke will remove odors and leave your laundry smelling good. If you have rust or blood stains on your clothing, rub some Coke into the stain, leave it sit a few minutes, and wash it as usual.

    Coke in the Garden

    • To eliminate snails and slugs that are feasting in your flower bed or garden, leave them a few bowls of Coke. The sweetness of the Coke will attract them, and the acid in it will kill them. Coke can also add extra life to any plants in your garden that prefer acidic soil, such as rhododendrons, azalea, marigolds, evergreens, phlox, blueberries or strawberries. Just pour a little Coke on the soil around the plants.
