Nowadays, many people are seeking natural ways to clean their homes. This includes cleaning kitchen sink drains. Many products created for this task contain ingredients that are dangerous to the environment, as they end up in sewers and water supplies. Fortunately, there are several home remedies for cleaning kitchen drains that effectively work against the dirt and debris that frequently clog sinks.
Bring a pot of water to a boil on the stove. Allow the water to heat until bubbling, then slowly pour it down the sink drain. Repeat at least once. Perform this chore weekly to help keep your drains free of debris.
Use a plunger on the sink's drain to unclog it. If a blockage causes water to stand in the sink, use a plunger as you would in the toilet. Rinse out the drain after using the plunger to flush out anything loosened up by the action.
Baking Soda and Lemon Juice
Use a combination of baking soda and the juice from a lemon to clean your kitchen drains. Pour 1 cup of baking soda into the drain, followed by 1 cup of lemon juice. Freshly-squeezed juice works best, but store-bought juice is effective as well. The acidity of the lemon activates the baking soda, causing it to unclog the dirt and debris stuck in the drain. Follow up by running hot water into the drain to flush out the mess.
Baking Soda and Vinegar
When used together, baking soda and vinegar may be the most powerful drain cleaner. Pour 1/2 cup of baking soda down the drain. Next, pour 1/2 cup of white vinegar into the drain. This mixture is strong enough for cut through grease and eliminate hair and other debris that is commonly trapped in a sink drain. For added benefits, pour a pot of boiling water into the drain about 15 minutes after adding the baking soda and vinegar to clean out the loosened particles.
Do not use any store-bought drain cleaners after using this combination, as a potentially-dangerous chemical reaction may occur.
Salt is another effective remedy for cleaning a kitchen sink drain. Add 2 tbsp. of salt to a boiling pot of water before pouring it down the drain. The salt will help dissolve the build-up that is clogging the drain. Flush out the drain with another pot of just-boiling water about 20 minutes later to ensure that it is clean.
