Best Man Duties

Being the best man in someone's wedding is an honor, but there are some duties and responsibilities that come with the privilege. One of your most important duties is to be there for the groom---for moral support, to calm his nerves on the big day and to stand by his side as he gets married.

    Attire

  1. You should plan to pick up your tuxedo---and possibly the groom's---or go with the groom to pick up the tuxedos a day or two before the wedding. You may be asked to return the groom's tuxedo and possibly the tuxedos of the other groomsmen to ensure they are back at the rental location on time.
  2. Bachelor Party

  3. The best man is responsible for organizing and with the other groom's attendants, paying for the bachelor party. Talk to the groom about the sort of party he wants. Some surprises are OK, but a little heads up is a good thing.
  4. Transportation

  5. The best man is generally responsible for transporting the groom to the church---and making sure he is there on time. The best man often drives the bride, groom and the maid of honor to the reception and should have the car decorated for the occasion. He may also be responsible for taking the bride and groom to the airport or honeymoon hotel after the reception.
  6. The Rings

  7. Usually, the best man will keep the wedding rings until the ring exchange during the ceremony. Know the rings are secure and in which pocket they are in)so there is no fumbling or panicking at the critical moment.
  8. Signing as a Witness

  9. The best man is also one of the official witnesses of the legal marriage ceremony, so you will be asked to sign the marriage license.
  10. Reception

  11. At the reception, you will sit to the left of the groom at the head table, and you will be expected to act as a master of ceremonies to a large extent. This involves announcing things like when everyone should be seated to eat, possibly leading a prayer if there is no minister before the meal begins and making the first toast to the newly wedding couple.

After the reception, you may be responsible for helping safeguard the card box and transporting the gifts to the bride and groom's home.
  12. Miscellaneous

  13. You also may also be responsible for handing the wedding officiant an envelope containing his or her fee, for helping gather the other groomsmen for photos and for greeting guests in the receiving line.
