Your main dish choice depends on the time you have available and the food preferences of your guests. Eggs in the form of omelets, huevos rancheros, scrambled eggs or fried eggs are popular.
Breakfast casseroles can be prepared ahead of time and refrigerated for cooking in the morning. Breakfast casseroles usually contain a mixture of eggs, bread, cheese and a vegetable such as broccoli or asparagus. Meat such as sausage or diced ham is also usually included.
Quiche is served more often for brunch than breakfast, but can be prepared for breakfast.
Any meat can be served for breakfast. Traditional choices include sliced ham, sausage, bacon and occasionally corned beef hash. Steak and eggs is a hearty breakfast for a special occasion.
Breakfast tacos can be made using a mixture of scrambled eggs, meat and hash browns and served with salsa.
Popular side dishes for breakfast include fruit such as cantaloupe, bananas, strawberries, grapefruit, oranges, blueberries, applesauce and fruit salads. Sliced tomatoes are traditional during summer in the South. Hash brown or home-style potatoes are enjoyed everywhere.
A bread dish of some kind is usually served at breakfast. Breads supply quick energy and are filling. Toast, English muffins, scones, biscuits, pancakes, waffles, cereal and muffins are often served for breakfast. In the South, grits are traditional, but not enjoyed by everyone.
Butter, jelly or jam, and syrup are made available for use as needed.
Orange juice or other fruit juices, tomato juice, milk, and coffee or tea are popular beverages for breakfast.
