There are many questions about the uses of baking soda in combination with brushing and flossing. There are many people out there that use baking soda solely as a replacement for toothpaste. There are certain properties of baking soda that makes it a good way of removing debris and food that collects on the teeth and the gums. However it's typically not recommended that baking soda used solely by itself. What we would recommend is that there are toothpastes that have baking soda in it as one of the ingredients. Again, with the advantage of baking soda is you have a little bit of abrasiveness that's found within that baking soda that again helps mechanically remove a lot of the collection of food, tartar, plaque, calculus that would collect on the teeth and the gums and while the baking soda again is abrasive enough to help remove a lot of that debris, it can also be detrimental to the teeth and gums if it's not used appropriately it can actually cause wear and damage to the surrounding structures of the tooth and gum. Now having said that, there are toothpastes that have that as an ingredient. So baking soda is a good material to use if it's within a toothpaste, however it's typically not recommended as means by itself because of the abrasive nature of the baking soda. But we do find that baking soda is one effective ingredient that we can use in brushing to help keep the teeth clean and also provide fresher breath.
