Hi, my name is Autumn Wintersgill, and today we're going to talk about how to knit a basic hat. I have a hat here that was made entirely using a rib pattern, and this allows it to be very stretchy, and this is a nice knit for beginners who are looking expand their abilities with knitting in the round and ribbing. You can also knit this in plain stockinette, which is what I'll be showing you. Cast on in order to fit the circumference of the person's head that you're making the hat for. Make sure that you check your gauge and count the number of stitches that you can make in one inch, and then multiply that number by the number of inches that is measured around the person's head that you're making the hat for. When you go to join, make sure that your work is turned so that the leading yarn from the skein is on the right, and bring the yarn in back and knit the first stitch on the left needle, and pull it over the stitch that you just knitted, and leave it on the left needle, and then go ahead and knit that stitch. So you just knitted your first two stitches and you're locked in the round. And now I'm going to start pearling and knitting to make a ribbed pattern. So it's knit one pearl one.
