This is Craig Jenkins-Sutton from Topiarius Urban Garden Design. Today, we’re going to be talking about courtyard landscaping ideas. One of the great things about a courtyard is the enclosed and secure space that it creates. The homeowner of this courtyard wanted to take full advantage of that security by creating a play area for her children. The safety and protection of the enclosed space is a wonderful spot for her children to play. The large windows provide an excellent opportunity for Mom to go in and make the afternoon snack while still being able to keep an eye on her children who are out here playing. We used artificial turf in this courtyard, because it’s a comfortable and safe place for the kids to play on, as well as providing a low-maintenance surface. Even though this space is used primarily for play, the courtyard also functions as the main walkway between the back of the house and the garage. We use bluestone for the walkway because it provides a safe and convenient surface to walk on even when it’s wet. Not wanting to sacrifice aesthetics, we included window boxes along the entire length of the brick parapet wall. The use of the window boxes provides both additional height, as well as the softening of the brick with the trailing plants as they grow down. The final touch in this courtyard is the inclusion of a tall narrow planter in the corner. This again helps to soften the space and to scale down the door. This is Craig from Topiarius. I hope this was helpful.
