Hi I'm Devra Gartenstein with Quirky Gourmet. Today I'm going to show you how to easily soften cabbage leaves for cabbage rolls. Cabbage rolls are a dish that you find in many cuisines from eastern Europe to the Middle East. And so you use the outer leaves of the cabbage. You soften them up and then you roll up some tasty filling in them. But the cabbage leaves when you first take them off the cabbage they can be a little brittle. And so if you were going to try to roll something up in them just like this they'd probably crack. And then your filling would fall out of your cabbage rolls and it wouldn't be nearly as pretty. So what you want to do is blanch the cabbage leaves. And blanching means just putting them in boiling water for just about 30 seconds. And it will be just long enough to soften them up. You are not really cooking them you are just making them easier to work with. So here I have a pot of boiling water. You put them in. And drain as much water off them as you can. And that is how you easily soften cabbage leaves for stuffed cabbage also known as cabbage rolls.
