Hot Buttered Rum

If you’ve ever dreamed of “Butterbeer,” this is the drink for you: a hot buttered rum that’s rich, warming and delicious all the way down.

Hi, I'm Joe Campanale for Today, we're going to make a hot buttered rum cocktail. Now, this is a really rare cocktail. When I hear hot buttered rum, I think of Harry Potter who's actually drinking a hot buttered rum cocktail. But in reality, it's a real drink. People drink it and it got its starts in the colonies in the seventeenth century. Basically they were able to get rum from the Caribbean and they already had a tradition of drinking hot spiced drinks like toddies. Now, remember, if you want to know about a toddy, you can check out my other video on But a toddy is any drink that has hot boiling water, and spices and sugar. So, they got their toddy tradition, their spiced rum from the Caribbean and made a hot buttered rum. So, let's get started. Now, to start with a hot buttered rum of course, you need some rum. I really like to use dark rum. You can also use a spiced rum or mix it up a little bit and play with equal parts light and dark, dark and spiced, however you like. But we're going to use two ounces and this is called a jigger. A jigger is a great bar tool, and basically it has different measuring, measurings on it. There's two ounce jiggers, one ounce jiggers, so let's find the one ounce side, and we're just going to add two ounces to it. Now, this is a really simple recipe built right in your glass. And then a half ounce of simple syrup, which is equal parts sugar and water dissolved. Great. And then I'm going to use just a quarter ounce of this heavy cream, to make it really nice and thick and wouldn't be hot buttered rum without some butter. Here we have just room temperature butter. I'm going to take just a pat of room temperature butter. If you want you can also make a compound butter and that's basically butter that has a great spice infusion whipped into it. that'd be really ideal in this cocktail. And then you just take your hot water and fill it up. You want just a little swirl, to melt the butter and add a cinnamon stick for garnish. And here you have it. Your hot buttered rum cocktail. Gotta a sip. I tell you this is the best part of my job. Wow, that is delicious. It's so warm and creamy that on a cold winter day, this is going to warm you up from the inside. I'm Joe Campanale.
