St. George is located in the Southwestern part of the state of Utah in Washington County. St. George, along with other cities in Utah celebrate Pioneer day each year. Pioneer day takes place on July 24. The holiday commemorates the settlement of Brigham Young and the Latter Day Saints into Utah after they were forced out of Illinois and other eastern states.

Pancake Breakfast

The activities on pioneer days often reflect a day of service. The day usually begins in St. George with a pancake breakfast that usually takes place from 7 a.m. to 9 a.m. at Ivins City Park. All of the proceeds benefit a specific cause. In the past the breakfast has benefited the local volunteer firefighters association.

Parade

Pioneer Days features a parade that begins at 9 a.m. at the City Park. The parade begins immediately following the flag raising ceremonies, which shows the patriotic attitude of the events. Parade participants include the St. George motorcycle police, the President of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints Church, local marching bands, horses and floats and military bands. Other groups are eligible to walk in the parade by submitting an application.

Park Activities

After the parade, you will find afternoon activities in the park. The St. George Professional Independent Minor League Baseball team sponsors the events. Children will enjoy a water slide and inflatables. There are also plenty of vendors that provide food such as hot dogs, funnel cakes, fries, barbecue, snow cones, ice cream and soda. Individuals can participate in games such as sack races, tug of war, wheelbarrow races, balloon toss, watermelon eating contest, pie throwing and other carnival type events. Celebrate Pioneer Day with balloons, face painting and tee shirts.

Fireworks and Movie

The day ends with a huge fireworks show after dark and a movie in the park. Participants can enjoy a classic film projected on the park facilities building. All of the events, including the fireworks and film are free of charge. Food and souvenirs of the event are affordable.
