How to Make a Quilted Bun Warmer

Bun warmers are charming and functional additions the dinner table. Bun warmers keep bread warm throughout a feast, so they are particularly helpful at Thanksgiving, Christmas or Passover or any large family gatherings. Homemade bread placed in a quilted bun warmer is a thoughtful gift for new neighbors. Making the warmers yourself allows you to select the fabric to match the occasion.

Things You'll Need:

  • Sewing Machine
  • Scissors
  • ½-Yard Coordinating Fabric
  • Measuring Tape
  • Sewing Thread
  • 20-By-20-Inch Thin Quilt Batting
  • Quilting Pins
  • ½-Yard Main Fabric
  • 3-Yard Double-Fold Bias Tape - ½-Inch Wide

Cut the main fabric into a 20-inch square. Cut the coordinating fabric into a 20-inch square.

Place the main fabric on a flat surface with the right side down. Place the quilt batting on top. Place the coordinating fabric on the top of the quilt batting with the right side up. Ensure all corners are even. This creates the fabric sandwich.

Pin the fabric sandwich layers together with quilting pins. Move the fabric sandwich to the sewing machine.

Place the fabric sandwich under the pressure foot and stitch in an all over ½-inch grid pattern. Remove the sandwich from the machine.

Measure and trim the quilted fabric sandwich down to a 16-inch square.

Cut the double-fold bias tape into two 24-inch pieces and two 16-inch pieces.

Insert one edge of the quilted fabric sandwich between the 16-inch long double-fold bias tape, and pin in place. Insert the opposite edge of the quilted fabric sandwich into the second piece of 16-inch long double-fold bias tape, and pin in place.

Center a bare edge of the quilted fabric sandwich on a 24-inch long piece of double-fold bias tape, and pin in place. Four inches will hang over each end and cover the raw edge of the previously placed shorter bias tape.

Center the opposite bare edge of the quilted fabric sandwich on the last 24-inch long piece of double-fold bias tape, and pin in place. Four inches will hang over each end and cover the raw edge of the previously placed shorter bias tape.

Place the assembly under the sewing machine pressure foot, and close all sides with a straight stitch about 1/8 inch from the edge. The extended bias tape creates the ties to close the quilted bun warmer.

Tip

Consider appliquéing or embroidering an initial to the main fabrics center to personalize the bun warmer. Make several at one time to have on hand for last minute hostess gifts.

Warnings:
