The soft, spreadable paste that's created when almonds are ground is referred to as almond butter. Almond butter is a good source of heart-healthy unsaturated fats, fiber and vitamin E, and it can be used as a sandwich or toast spread. It's far from the only option when it comes to spreadable condiments, however, and there are numerous alternatives if you're tired of almond butter or can't eat it because of a food allergy.
Go Nuts With Peanut Butter
Peanut butter is an obvious replacement for almond butter. Similar in texture to almond butter, peanut butter is also a good source of unsaturated fats, which can help boost the health of your heart. Almond butter, however, supplies more unsaturated fats than peanut butter, as well as more fiber and vitamin E. Substitute peanut butter for almond butter in a sandwich or use it as a healthy dip for apple slices or celery sticks.
Spread on Sunflower Seed Butter
Sunflower seed butter is often used as a replacement for peanut butter or tree nut butters, especially for people with peanut allergies. Sunflower seed butter contains more monounsaturated fats than almond butter, and it also delivers 3.66 milligrams of vitamin E, which is a little more than one-fifth of the amount adults need daily. Sunflower seed butter doesn't contain as much fiber as almond butter, but it does supply more folate. Sunflower seed butter can replace almond butter on a slice of toast or spread on a piece of homemade banana or zucchini bread.
Get Keen on Cashew Butter
Cashew butter is another nutritious source of heart-healthy unsaturated fats, though it contains less than almond butter. Cashew butter doesn't contain as much vitamin E or fiber as almond butter, but it does deliver vitamin K, which almond butter does not. Cashew butter is higher in saturated fat than almond butter, however. Cashew butter can be used interchangeably with almond butter, and it pairs well with baked goods and is tasty spread on crackers.
Substitutions Other Than Nut Butters
If you're open to an entirely new flavor, you have several other options for replacing almond butter. Try hummus on toast in place of almond butter as one alternative to other nut butters. Hazelnut spread, honey or all-fruit spreads are additional options you can use in place of almond butter.
