A conch shell is a large seashell that is characterized by its curled nature, spiraled point and wide open canal. With some time and patience, you can make a conch shell out of paper. It might take some practice, but this craft is so inexpensive that it will not be overly frustrating to have to try a few times. Use printer paper or more colorful, patterned paper that you find around the house to make a conch shell out of paper.

Things You'll Need:

  • Table Or Flat Surface
  • 6 Inch Square Piece Of Paper

Place a 6-inch square piece of paper on a table or flat surface in front of you, so that it resembles a diamond. The top point of the diamond should face away from you, and the bottom point of the diamond should face you.

Pull the top point of the diamond down until it meets the bottom point. Press down firmly to make a crease. Open the fold back up.

Pull the upper right edge to the center fold line, making sure that the edge is flush with the crease that you created in Step 2. Press down firmly to make a crease.

Repeat Step 3 with the upper left edge.

Pull the bottom right edge up so that it aligns with the outside right edge along the crease line that you created. Press down firmly to create a crease. Pinch the point that is extending past the edge of the left side and fold it back over so it is flush with the edge. Press down firmly to create a crease. The open end and the pointed end are beginning to be the front of the conch shell.

Perform a fan-fold to create the curl of the conch shell.

A fan-fold is when you take a piece of paper and fold the edge over a certain small distance, such as one inch. You then make a small crease, flip the paper over and make the same equidistant fold on the other side. This is repeated until the paper resembles a fan.

For the conch shell, create a fan-fold with the point mentioned in Step 5. Fold the point to the right. This pull will create the curl of the shell. Fold the tip to the left one inch. Press down firmly to create a crease. Flip the paper over and perform another fan-fold, once again using a one inch distance. Repeat this process three more times, allowing the last fold to be the front of the conch shell.

Hold the entire conch shell. Pinch the paper open on the left side. Pull it an inch or so, until you feel it looks like the open end of a conch shell. Unfold the fan-fold. Bend it so it looks like the curl of a conch shell.

Display the paper conch shell.
