How to Neutralize Feces Odor

Get rid of the odor left behind by fecal matter with an odor neutralizer. Fecal matter consists of digested and indigestible food particles, which emit gases into the air to create the unpleasant smell. Odor neutralizers work by absorbing and killing bacteria contained in the fecal matter. Some odor neutralizers are designed specifically for animals, keeping the animals from marking the same areas with their waste again. Neutralize the odors being caused by fecal matter accidents in less than ten minutes.

Things You'll Need

Purchase an odor neutralizer that best fits your situation. Brands like but not limited to Nature Chemistry Stain and Odor Eliminator, Nature's Miracle and FON (Feline Odor Neutralizer) can be found at your local pet stores and are specifically designed for either cats or dogs. They are formulated to eliminate the chance of the animal marking the same territory or area again by the use of scent. Local grocery stores also sell odor neutralizer products, in case of a non-pet-related accident.

Apply the odor neutralizer to the areas affected by the fecal matter fumes, as per packaging instructions. Spray the neutralizer if a spray bottle was included, or pour some onto a soft cloth and rub the areas in need of cleaning instead. Wipe the areas clean with another soft cloth.

Wash the areas affected by the fecal matter fumes once more, this time with a mixture of dish detergent and water. Dip a clean cloth into the soapy mixture, then rub the areas to get rid of any residue particles that may have been overlooked and left behind. Ensure that all fecal matter has been removed at this point.

Rinse the areas one last time with clean water, then dry them with a towel. Repeat the entire process as needed if the smell is persistent.
