The only tools you need for finger crocheting are your fingers. Finger crocheting is simple enough for children to master and the results are similar to crocheting with a hook. Instead of a tool, use your pointer, or index, finger as the hook. To crochet without a hook, start with a ball of yarn. Create a slipknot with your fingers to begin finger crocheting.

Curl the end of your thick yarn around your right index finger so the end is hanging down on the right side of the finger Thick yarn is good for beginners because it is easy to hold onto.

Cross over the end of the yarn with the yarn on the left side, which is attached to the ball of the yarn. Stick your right hand middle finger into the loop you created. You should have your right index and middle finger in the loop and your left hand is holding the end of the yarn and the yarn attached to the ball.

Twist the loop down with your index and middle finger. Hold those fingers open slightly so you can see the yarn attached to the ball of the yarn through the loop. Your left hand is still holding the end of the yarn.

Pull the yarn that you seen in the open loop with your index finger. This yarn should be the yarn that is attached to the ball of yarn. Once you pull it, you will form a slipknot, which looks like a looped knot. The end of the yarn is on the left side and the yarn attached to the ball of yarn is on the right side.

Hook the yarn that is attached to the ball of yarn with your right thumb and index through this loop. Pull it through to finger crochet, keeping a small loop open. Continue pulling the yarn through the loop until you have used all your yarn.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you are left-handed, you will need to use these instructions with the other hand.
  • Finger crochet many strands of yarn together to form a rope. Use 100 percent wool yarn for this project. Then, felt the completed rope by washing it in hot water in the washing machine.
