Inside the dark green shell of an avocado is a light-colored fruit that is cooling, nutty and slightly buttery tasting. Although avocados are high in fat, most is the monounsaturated kind -- meaning it won't raise your cholesterol level. But since the fruit is also high in calories you can snack on an avocado over a few days and store the rest.
Keep the avocado in your refrigerator's crisper. Don't place apples in the same bin to avoid speeding up the ripening process.
Remove the avocado from the refrigerator and allow it to ripen on the counter for two or three days.
Wrap sliced avocado in plastic cling wrap. Refrigerate the pieces to keep them from turning mushy.
