Raccoons are very bright and curious creatures. As a result of their natural curiosity, they can become a nuisance. Raccoons can destroy crops, make a mess by knocking over the garbage can, or destroy your property by pulling down attic insulation. Since they are so intelligent, they can be very difficult to get rid of. Raccoons have been known to escape from and avoid traps. There are repellents that you can create yourself from things around your home.

Things You'll Need

  • Spray bottle
  • Hot sauce repellent
  • Bowl
  • Spoon
  • 1 bottle of hot sauce
  • 1 gallon of water
  • 1 tsp. of dishwashing detergent
  • 2 qt. of water
  • 1 tbsp. of cayenne pepper
  • 1 chopped jalapeno pepper
  • 1 chopped yellow onion
  • 1 cheesecloth
  • Pot

Hot Sauce Repellent

Mix one small bottle of hot sauce with one gallon of water.

Add 1 tsp. of dishwashing detergent.

Pour the solution into a spray bottle.

Spray the mixture anywhere you want the raccoon to avoid. You can spray it on trees and shrubs as well. Reapply the solution, after it has rained.

Cayenne and Jalapeno Repellent

Fill a pot with 2 qt. of water.

Add in 1 tbsp. of cayenne pepper, one chopped jalapeno pepper and one chopped yellow onion to the pot.

Boil all of the ingredients for 20 minutes.

Strain the mixture with cheesecloth, after it cools.

Pour the strained liquid into a spray bottle.

Spray it to deter raccoons. This solution can be sprayed on the ground and on solid, outside materials. Avoid spraying it on plant life. It will wear off in three to five days, and will need to be reapplied.

Tips & Warnings

  • To deter raccoons, you can also place dog droppings or human urine under spreading or growing plant life.
  • Another deterrent is the human voice, turn a radio to a talk radio show and play it in the area where you want the raccoons to stay away.
