How to Cut a Laminate Countertop Backsplash Outlet

Paul Massey

Adding a prefabricated laminate countertop can give an attractive new look as part of a kitchen remodeling project. When installing the new laminate countertop, it is often necessary to cut openings in the countertop's backsplash for existing wall outlets or switches. The procedure for cutting the outlet openings insures accurate placement to complete the laminate countertop installation.

Cut a Laminate Countertop Backsplash Outlet
  1. Layout the backsplash outlet location on the vertical surface of the backsplash, then mark the perimeter outline of the outlet opening using a pencil and straightedge. Verify that the outlet hole laid out is plumb and level with a torpedo level.

  2. Drill a 1/4-inch hole at each inside corner of the outlet hole perimeter marked in Step 1 using an electric drill.

  3. Cut the outlet opening in the backsplash using a jigsaw mounted with a fine-toothed, down-cutting wood blade to minimize chipping of the laminate at the edge of the cut.
