Calculating a table top's area gives you a calculation for space requirements, setting areas or material needs for construction or coverings. Round tables offer a slightly more challenging calculation when determining area, since the standard 'width times height' calculation does not imply. However, following a simple formula will allow you to calculate the area painlessly. This calculation allows you to adequately plan your next spread, or ensures you have sufficient materials for construction or design.
Step 1
Measure the diameter of the table using your tape measure. This is the edge-to-edge distance, through the center of the table, which consequently measures the longest distance between edges.

Divide the diameter by two to calculate the radius of the circle. The radius is the distance from the exact center of the circle to the edge. However, since determining the exact center can be challenging, it's much easier to measure the diameter and divide by two. As an example, if you measured 4 feet in diameter, the radius would be 2 feet.
Step 3
Square the radius and multiply by "pi," which is 3.14, to calculate the area. In the example, squaring 2 feet results in 4 square feet. Multiply that number by 3.14, and you calculate the table top area of 12.56 square feet.
