Preparations

Your carpet will need time to dry, so plan a family day out after your cleaning session. If you can, remove all furniture from the room you're going to clean. After you vacuum the area and before beginning the deep cleaning, Bissell recommends pretreating your carpets, especially in high-traffic or particularly dirty areas to make your deep cleaning more efficient. To pretreat your carpets, spray Bissell Stain Pretreat over the area, but make sure not to overdo it. Let the pretreat sit for about five minutes before beginning the deep clean.

Fill the Water Tank

First, you need to fill the water tank. Remove the tank from the base by the handle and separate the top of the tank from the bottom by unlatching it on each side. Then, fill the bladder with hot tap water (60 degrees Celsius/140 degrees Fahrenheit max). Never boil or microwave water as it risks permanently damaging the bladder.

Second, add carpet cleaning solution. For best results and for the safety of your machine, Bissell recommends using genuine Bissell 2X formulas for cleaning. Pour two measuring cups of the solution into the bladder (about 5 ounces/138 milliliters total).

Make sure to connect the top of the tank to the bottom by securing the latches on both sides. Finally, reposition the full water tank back onto the machine base. You're all set to go.

Clean Your Carpets

Plug in your carpet cleaner and turn it on. Press on the recline pedal to recline the handle. Starting in the corner farthest from the exit, press the spray trigger and move slowly backward and forward over the carpeted area, making sure not to over wet it. You want the carpet to dry completely within 24 hours of cleaning to prevent mildew. After wetting the area, release the spray trigger and go over the same area once again. Continue dry passes until you see that the machine isn't suctioning water anymore. If you notice hair, debris or any objects on the carpet, make sure to throw them away. If your carpet cleaner encounters a large object, it will automatically shut itself off. In that case, unplug it and remove the object if it's stuck in the brush roll before plugging it in again.

At the end of the process, empty the dirty water from the tank, clean the filter and empty the hair and debris basket.
