Wool's itchiness can be reduced by washing it with some household ingredients.

Wool is a warm, durable fiber, but can drive some people nuts because of its itchy feel on bare skin. However, there are a couple of home remedies that can help reduce that scratchy sensation while protecting the wool fibers and the warmth they provide. Washing the wool with some household items can soften it and stop the scratching.

Things You'll Need

  • Washing machine
  • White distilled vinegar
  • Hair conditioner
  • Water
  • Basin or bowl
  • Towel

Vinegar Treatment

Step 1

Place the wool item that you would like to soften in a washing machine. Set the machine to a cold wash cycle and turn it on.

Step 2

Add two cups of white distilled vinegar to the machine during the rinse cycle.

Step 3

Remove the wool item from the machine once the cycle has finished, lay it flat and leave it to dry. Check to see if it has softened once dry. If still itchy, repeat the full wash cycle, again adding vinegar during the rinse cycle.

Hair Conditioner Treatment

Step 1

Mix two to three tablespoons of hair conditioner with lukewarm water in a basin or bowl large enough to accommodate the wool item.

Step 2

Place the wool item in the basin, making sure the entire item is fully submerged. Let it sit in the mixture for five to ten minutes.

Step 3

Remove the item from the mixture, and place it on a towel. Gently roll the towel to squeeze the liquid from the item.

Step 4

Set the item somewhere to dry after the excess liquid has been squeezed out.

Tip

  • Check the particular hair conditioner to see if it leaves a sticky residue before using it on the wool item. If it leaves a sticky residue on the hair, it will likely leave the same residue on the wool.

Warning

  • Do not agitate the wool item in the hair conditioner solution, as it could damage the item.
