How to Clean Sheet Steel

Save

Sheet steel should be cleaned right after it is installed to remove construction debris, according to the Canadian Sheet Steel Building Institute. After installation, regular care extends the life of sheet steel and maintains the quality of its finish. Once annually, clean your sheet steel to remove dust, dirt and debris. The best cleaning solution is simple soap and water. In between annual cleanings, sheet steel stains can be spot cleaned with mineral spirits.

Things You'll Need

  • Hose
  • Pressure washer
  • Powder laundry detergent
  • Water
  • Soft-bristled scrub brush
  • Trisodium phosphate
  • Laundry bleach
  • Mineral spirits

Rinse the sheet steel with a hose or pressure washer if it is not heavily soiled.

Add 1/3 cup of detergent to 1 gallon of water and mix well. Dip your scrub brush in the solution and use it to scrub away dirt and debris. Rinse the sheet steel clean.

Mix 1/3 cup detergent, 2/3 cup trisodium phosphate, 1 qt. laundry bleach and 3 qt. water. Dip a scrub brush in the mixture, and use it to scrub away mold or mildew. Rinse the sheet steel clean.

Clean caulk, oil, grease, tar, wax and other stains away with a rag soaked in mineral spirits. Follow with a detergent scrub as performed earlier.

Tips & Warnings
