How to Paint Gold Buckles a Silver Color

With frequent wear and exposure to the elements, the gold buckles on your shoes, belts or coats may appear dull and drab. A fresh coat of silver spray paint, however, can update your faded and unsightly gold-colored buckles in an instant. Whether you are a spray-painting novice or an upcycling expert, you can transform and add polish to your old gold buckles with a metallic or muted shade of silver paint.

Things You'll Need

  • Newspaper

  • Tape

  • Silver spray paint

Step 1

Prepare an area for spray painting. Cover a table with newspaper and tape it down or spread some newspaper in the grass or other outdoor area.

Step 2

Place the buckles on the newspaper. If you are painting a buckle that's attached to a belt, try to remove the buckle first. If removal is not possible, cover any exposed leather or fabric around the buckle with masking tape to avoid getting paint on it.

Step 3

Spray the buckles with a top-quality spray paint designed for metal. Be sure to turn the buckle over to coat all of the metal. You may want to wear a pair of latex gloves to avoid getting paint on your skin.

Step 4

Let the paint dry for the amount of time suggested for the paint brand you've used.

Step 5

Check the buckle for any bare spots you may have missed.

Step 6

Add another coat if the gold hue isn't completely covered. Repeat the process for as many coats as you desire.

Step 7

Be aware that paint, no matter how high the quality, is always subject to scratching. If your buckle gets scratched and the original gold color shows through, re-paint the area.
