How to Make a Window Valance From a Bed Sheet

Coordinate your bedroom by purchasing an extra set of sheets and creating other items for the room. Add simply made throw pillows from the sheet fabric to your bed. Creating simple window valences from a flat sheet is an easy project for any beginner with basic sewing skills to tackle, taking just a bit of cutting and sewing to complete.

Things You'll Need:

  • Sewing Machine
  • Scissors
  • 1 Flat Bed Sheet
  • Pencil
  • Tape Measure
  • Thread
  • Iron

Measure your window horizontally, then double the measurement. Choose a bed sheet size that is closest to the doubled measurement number. A twin sheet is 66 inches wide; a full sheet is 80 inches wide; a queen sheet is 90 inches wide; and a king sheet is 110 inches wide.

Measure and mark 2 inches down from the top of the flat sheet. You can identify the sheet top by the 5-inch hem. The sheet is open at the sides of the hem, making one large, long tube. Sew across the hem, at the 2-inch marking, with your sewing machine. This stitching creates two tubes, an upper one and a lower one. The curtain rod will fit through the second tube. The top tube creates a ruffle as the sheet is bunched together on the curtain rod.

Measure and mark the sheet 13 inches from the top. Cut all the way across the sheet at the mark.

Fold the cut edge under 1/4 inch and press it with your iron. Fold under another 1/4 inch and press.

Sew across at the inside edge of the fold, all the way across, with your sewing machine. Press the entire valence and hang it on the curtain rod.

Tip

Make window curtains with these same instructions. Just measure from the top to the bottom of the curtain area. Don’t forget to add extra for the bottom hem.
