A life-size doll can be an interesting addition to your doll collection. Even if you are not a collector, a life-size doll can be a rewarding project. As a novelty, a life-size doll can be used as many things. You can create a celebrity look alike, a stunt double for home movies, a carpool buddy (be prepared to explain it if you're pulled over) or just a friendly face to keep you company.
Things You'll Need
- 4 yards of flesh-toned fabric
- Fabric marking pen
- Straight pins
- Sewing machine
- Iron on transfer sheet
Video of the Day
Enlarge on your computer the image of the face that you want your doll to have. It must be large enough to fit the whole sheet of the iron-on transfer. Print the image on the iron-on transfer, making sure that you follow the directions provided for the iron-on transfer and print a mirror image of the face you are using. Set this aside as you will use it later.
Fold your flesh-toned fabric in half and place it on a clean surface. Have a friend who is approximately 5 feet, five inches lay on her back on the fabric. Using a fabric marking pen, trace around her body, allowing for a seam allowance of about 5/8 inch. Cut out your fabric.
Turn the fabric right sides together and secure with straight pins.
Sew along the outside edge of the body with a 5/8 seam allowance, removing the pins as you go. Start where the ear would be and stitch around the body. You can use a smaller seam allowance around the fingers to create less bulk in that area. Stitch to where the other ear would be and leave the top of the head open for stuffing.
Turn the body right side out. A thin dowel can be used to help turn the fingers right side out. At this point you can apply the iron on transfer, be sure to align the transfer carefully. Use a hard surface to iron on. Iron with high temperature. Keep the iron moving so you don't scorch the image.
Stuff the body with fiberfill until you reach the desired thickness. Add heavy gauge bendable wire to help give the doll more structure.
Hand stitch closed the opening in the head. This seam will be covered with hair, so it will not be easily seen.
Embellish your doll with hair, clothing and accessories.
