Rice-filled pouches can provide hot or cold relief much like an ice pack or a hot pad. Use a rice filled ice pack to relieve aches and pains resulting from muscle strains, headaches or even sinus and allergy symptoms. Add fragrance if you like for an aromatic option to relieve your stress as you cool off your aching body.

Things You'll Need

  • 1/4 yard fabric
  • Straight pins
  • Needle and thread, sewing machine or fabric glue
  • Iron
  • Rice
  • Dried herbs or essential oils (optional)

Video of the Day

Cut two rectangles out of your fabric, 8 inches long by 4 inches wide. Pin the two pieces of fabric together with right sides facing.

Sew a hem 1/4 inch from the edge on three of the four sides, leaving one 4-inch side unsewn. If you have a sewing machine, use a running or zigzag stitch. Hand sew a backstitch if you use that method. If you do not know how to sew, glue the edges of the fabric together using washable fabric adhesive.

Turn the fabric pouch right side out and iron flat to finish up the seams.

Fill the pouch with dry rice. If you want fragrance in your ice pack, also add a handful of dried herbs, such as lavender, rosemary or sage. Or you can add a few drops of essential oils in one of these fragrances. The addition of fragrance to your pouch will add an aromatherapy element to your ice pack.

Sew or glue the final seam shut. Fold the edges under first so the frayed portion of the fabric will not show.

Place your fabric pouch inside a zippered freezer bag and place inside the freezer for 30 minutes to cool it. Take it out and use it as an ice pack, holding it on any sore parts of your body.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you want to use your rice pouch as a heat pad, simply warm it in the microwave for 30 seconds instead of storing it in the freezer.
