The rooster has come to symbolize rural living over the decades and is indispensable to the operation of most farms. If you’re planning on wearing an animal costume for an upcoming party or event, why not considering emulating this pillar of the American heartland? You can make your own from easy-to-find items. The process requires minimal sewing skills and serves as a creative way to spend an otherwise lazy afternoon.
Things You'll Need
- 2 brown t-shirts, same size and large enough to hang to mid thigh
- 1-inch-wide hook-and-loop tape, 2 inches long
- 2 brown feather boas
- Hot glue gun
- Brown stocking cap
- Red felt craft sheet
- Sewing needle and red thread
- Brown turtle neck
- Yellow tights, leggings or sweatpants
- Yellow household rubber gloves
Place one t-shirt inside the other. Match the sleeve holes and neck holes and pin them together. Top stitch around each sleeve opening and the neck opening. This will create a t-shirt with a lining. Fill and fluff between the shirts with stuffing to give the rooster a round body.
Pin the bottom of the t-shirts together. Sew the pinned edges together. Take the 2 inches of hook-and-loop tape; pin one piece to the outside center of the shirt's front hem and one piece to the inside center of the shirt's back hem. Top stitch the hook-and-loop tape to the shirt. The tape will be connected between the legs when the costume is worn.
Glue the feather boas to the stuffed t-shirts just below the neckband on the back of the shirt. Wind the boas around the t-shirt body until the shirt is covered, hot gluing every few inches.
Place the knit hat on your child's head and carefully pin the feathered boa around the cuff or brim. Remove the hat. Apply a dab of hot glue to the hat as you remove each pin. Placing the hat on the head and pinning the boa ahead of time will provide the stretch needed before gluing.
Draw a 2-inch wide by 6-inch long rectangle on a sheet of paper. Draw a wavy line with two humps on one long side of the rectangle. Cut out the shape. This is the pattern for the rooster costume comb. Fold the red felt craft sheet in half lengthwise and pin the pattern through both layers. Cut the comb out.
Pin the two short ends and the wavy edge together. Sew a 1/4-inch seam allowance on the pinned edges. Turn the rooster comb right side out. Stuff the comb and pin the straight edges together. Top stitch the pinned edge closed. Center the comb vertically over the center top of the cap and pin. Hand sew the comb to the cap.
Put on the turtle neck and yellow tights.
Add the rooster body and fasten the bottom closed between the legs. Place the hat on.
Stuff the fingers of the rubber gloves. Insert your shoes into the rubber gloves, pulling the wrists of the gloves up over the heels of the shoes. Use hot glue to fasten the gloves to the shoes so they don't come off.
