How to Clean PVC Pipe
PVC pipe has a wide range of uses that make it ideal for home uses. It's noncorrosive, which is perfect for drinking water. It can run longer lengths, upward of 20 feet, which will lower the amount of joints needed, thus reducing water friction and the chance to leak.
Things You Will Need
- PVC pipe
- Saw or pipe cutter
- Nylon scrub pad
- Powdered cleaner (Comet)
- Acetone
- Steel wool
- Rubber gloves
- Protective eye wear
- White lint-free cloth
PVC pipe is lighter than conventional copper pipes, more cost effective and it can be painted to match any need. Before you do any painting on the PVC pipe, you might want to clean off the industrial markings and make sure it's free of any dirt.

Cut lengths of PVC pipe that you will use for project with the pipe cutter or saw.

Sprinkle powdered cleaner on PVC pipe and wet pipe with water. Use the scrub pad in small circular motions on the wet powdered cleaner on the pipe to remove markings and dirt. Rinse PVC pipe with water when markings or dirt have been removed.

If markings or dirt have not been removed, soak steel wool pad in acetone. Gently rub off markings or dirt with the steel wool. Work in small sections, no more than 2 feet of pipe at a time, while working with the acetone.

Use the lint-free white cloth to wipe the acetone off of the pipe.

Rinse the PVC pipe with water and allow to completely dry before any installation.

It is always easier to clean the PVC pipe before installation. This allows total cleaning of the pipe, free from pipe cement and joints.
