How to Remove Purple Primer on a PVC Pipe

Save

While working with PVC pipe, it is not uncommon for sections around the joints to be discolored by purple primer. In some applications, it is desirable to clean away these markings. This can be a very difficult task.

Things You'll Need

  • Clean rags
  • Lacquer thinner
  • "Gumout Choke and Carb Cleaner"

Video of the Day

Vigorously rub the stained area, using generous amounts of the thinner. (This will only be effective if the primer is fresh and has not dried.)

For dried areas, you will need to use a harsher chemical. Spray the stained area with "Gumout Choke and Carb Cleaner," and rub with a clean rag.

Vigerous rubbing and repeated applications will be required to remove the primer completely.

Repeat steps 3 and 4 until the area is clean.

Tips & Warnings

  • Try to get the area clean before the primer dries; this is critical to making this a manageable project.
  • Make certain your work area is well ventilated when cleaning the pipes.
