Oil drips or spills on the garage floor are unattractive and can be a hazard. You can get rid of those oily areas with a few simple materials that you may already have around the house.

Things You'll Need

  • Kitty litter
  • Dustpan and brush
  • Detergent

Place layers of newspaper on the oily areas. Wet them with water, then walk back on forth over them to set them in place. Let the papers dry, then pull them up. Much of the oil should come off the floor with the paper.

Spread clean kitty litter over the oily spots. Let it sit for a few minutes to absorb the oil. Sweep it up with a dustpan and brush.

Wash the treated areas with detergent and water. Rinse well and let it air-dry.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you do not want to dirty your dustpan brush, scoop up the oily kitty litter with a plastic scoop or cut off the top of a milk jug to make your own scoop.
  • If the stains on your garage floor are tough to remove, apply some detergent before spreading the kitty litter, then proceed as before.
  • Be sure to properly and safely dispose of the oily newspaper or kitty litter.
